Hubert "Doc" Hilton –
A Glen Cove Legend

Often described as the kindest, gentlest man outside the ring, Hubert “Doc” Hilton was a driven and ferocious competitor inside it. A professional heavyweight boxer during the 1960s and 1970s, Hilton stood 6 feet 1 inch tall and compiled an impressive professional record of 19 wins, 10 losses, and 2 draws, with 12 of those victories coming by knockout.
A lifelong resident and local legend of Glen Cove, Hilton began boxing at the age of 17 at Lincoln House, now known as the Boys and Girls Club. In 1965, he reached the pinnacle of his career when Ring magazine ranked him as the seventh-best heavyweight boxer in the world. Throughout his career, he faced several notable opponents, including Henry Cooper, Jimmy Ellis, and Oscar Bonavena.
Though he stopped boxing professionally in 1973, Hilton never truly retired from the sport. He continued to train and spar—taking thousands of punches from none other than Howard Davis Jr., who went on to win the gold medal in the 1976 Olympics.
Affectionately known as “Doc,” Hilton remained deeply rooted in the Glen Cove community until his passing on October 27, 2022. His legacy endures, cherished by those who knew and admired him both in and out of the ring.
